Under the direction of Canadian guest conductor Jaelem Bhate, the orchestra highlights powerful works that weave a link between eras and cultures.

At the heart of this program, Ensemble Obiora pays tribute to Florence Price, an iconic figure in American classical music, with her Piano Concerto in One Movement. The first African-American composer to have an orchestral work performed by a major orchestra, Price combined influences from the European Romantic tradition with elements of African-American music, creating a profoundly expressive and innovative musical language. This concerto, at once lyrical and exhilarating, reveals the full richness of his writing and the intensity of his inspiration.

Pianist John Kofi Dapaah’s refined, emotional playing will bring out all the richness and intensity of this singular work.
